Definition : Varible Speed Drives
VSD Control Systems

Electronic Variable-speed drive (VSD) describes equipment used to control and protect electrical motors. A VSD can control positioning, speed, braking and torque of a motor. VSD types are designed to suit the type of motor they will control.

Control is achieved by varying the voltage, frequency and current to the motor. VSD’s have high speed processors to handle the input and output of electrical power and rapid processing of control and feedback signals.

VSD Applications

Many industrial processes such as assembly lines must operate at different speeds for different products and demands. Where process conditions demand adjustment of flow from a pump or fan, varying the speed of the drive may save energy compared with other techniques for flow control.

Positioning tasks are frequent in manufacturing. Tension control during the manufacturing of a product is normally done using torque control of a motor. The link below shows an application in which several VSD,s were used to control the manufacturing speed and tension of the products.

Siemens VSD ranges and types

Siemens ranges of VSD’s include Simodrive, Simovert, Simoreg, Masterdrive, Micromaster and Sinamics
