PLC

A programmable logic controller (PLC) is an industrial digital computer used for automation of industrial processes, such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines. Unlike general computer hardware, reliability and not speed determines the design and components.
Programs require very little memory. Hardware and software are monitored strictly for any sign of error that might cause catastrophic results and the system is shutdown in a desired manner. PLC’s are generally scalable to your application and can handle a variety of different input and output signal types. The program is written to control output signals based on analysis of the input signals it receives.
PLC’s can be found in the simplest automation tasks, like household pools, gates and lights. Complex demanding automation tasks, like military aircraft carriers will deploy hundreds of PLC’s in redundant designs networked to each other and higher level computer systems.
The largest users of PLC’s are machines and processes in the manufacturing industry. The link below contains videos of some applications of PLC’s in the manufacturing industry.
